As July is one of the peak bright months in the valley, the snow blanket is completely gone by the beginning of this month. Furthermore, as summer has already arrived in the region, the days remain considerably warmer than other months. Though the mornings could be a bit cold, temperature gradually starts rising as the sun rises overhead. On a whole, temperature during the day should reach up to 15 to 23 degrees with afternoon recording the highest. By late afternoon, temperature takes a slow dip, and can fall up to 10 degrees.
However, by the time it’s late evening; or night, temperature could fall somewhere between 5 to 8 degrees. Though the night temperature or Ladakh weather in July promises warmer nights than other months, one should definitely consider getting acclimatised to such low temperature at nights. And the best possible way to get acclimatised to such low temperature would be spending some time at lower altitudes. Also, July is the month that marks the beginning of monsoon in the Himalayas. Keeping this in mind, if you plan a road trip to Ladakh via Manali-Leh Highway, you should be extremely careful as there are chances of landslides in this route. Though the route remains fully operational, landslides brings down the traffic to a halt. At times, traffic congestion may last up to hours, and this might make the journey difficult for the visitors.
On the other hand, the Srinagar-Leh Highway offers zero hassles in the month of July. Thus, this route is preferred by many to reach their favourite destination. However, in the entire course, you may have to go through some uneven trails near the Zoji La Pass, but then, it is quite well manageable.
Ladakh weather in July can also get rainy at time as July is the monsoon time in Himalayas. One should be prepared to experience sudden rainfall while touring around the region.
Also, as the snow and the glaciers are under complete meltdown in July, you may have to come across water patches in the midst of your journey. Locally called as ‘nullahs’, these water crossings or streams could be found all across Ladakh. Though not considered as extreme, at times, they could offer you much of challenges in crossing them; especially if you are travelling on motorcycles. For other vehicles; hatchbacks, SUVs, and other 4-wheelers, ground clearance could become an issue. And to be precise here, the small rivulets or nullahs could be found all across Leh-Ladakh region during the month of July.
